How to make a working roller coaster in Roblox Studio
Most Roblox coasters fail in the same places: carts that derail or jitter, riders thrown out of seats, trains that stall on the second hill and brake runs that don't stop anything. This guide shows the approach that avoids all of them, and how to do it in a few minutes with the free Ridewright plugin.
Why physics carts break
Constraint- or wheel-based carts leave the motion to Roblox's physics solver. Small errors build up at speed, seam joints catch wheels and network ownership changes cause stutter for other players. That's why so many DevForum threads ask about jitter and derailing.
Use path-driven motion instead
A reliable coaster treats the track as a mathematical path. The server owns one number, the train's distance along that path, and every client places the carts from it. Ridewright's kit does exactly that: it replays a deterministic 60 Hz motion plan on every client, so cars never leave the rails and riders stay seated. Rails can still be solid, so players can walk on the track.
Lay track on a grid
Pieces sit on an 8-stud grid with one slope angle (3-4-5, about 37°). Straights and brakes are 8 studs, turns are quarter circles of radius 8, slopes climb 6 studs per piece and transitions climb 2. With these rules every piece ends exactly where the next one starts, so you can build with Studio's default 1-stud Move and 90° Rotate snapping, or let the plugin snap pieces for you.
Give it enough energy
In Realistic mode the train launches out of the station, climbs on the chain lift at 7 studs/s and coasts on gravity from there. Every hill after the first drop must be lower than the energy left after friction. If a hill is too tall the train stalls and rolls back. Ridewright's Check ride simulates the full dispatch and names the piece where it would stall.
Finish with a brake run
A brake piece slows a fast train to 10 studs/s at 18 studs/s². Coming off a 28-stud drop at about 42 studs/s, you need around six brake pieces. Too few, and the train hits the station hot. Finish track routes your layout home and sizes the brake run automatically.
Or generate the whole thing
Tell the generator your footprint, maximum height and style. It builds a lift, drop, hills and turns, routes back without overlaps and simulates each candidate before building the best one in your place. Try it in your browser.
